The Hunter College Department of Film and Media Studies is very pleased to welcome filmmaker Sky Hopinka in person, on Tuesday evening, April 26, as the first guest in our new series, Threads and Frequencies: Dialogues with Transformational Media Artists. Sky will be presenting a program of short films, including his most recent work, Kicking The Clouds (2021) and Mnemonics of Shape and Reason (2021).

​​Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) makes video, photo, and text work that centers around personal positions of Indigenous homeland and landscape, designs of language as containers of culture expressed through personal, documentary, and non-fiction forms of media. His work has been exhibited at numerous festivals and other venues including Sundance, the Toronto International Film Festival, the New York Film Festival, and the 2017 Whitney Biennial. He was a guest curator at the 2019 Whitney Biennial and participated in Cosmopolis #2 at the Centre Pompidou. Sky was a fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University in 2018- 2019, a Sundance Art of Nonfiction Fellow for 2019, an Art Matters Fellow in 2019, a recipient of a 2020 Alpert Award for Film/Video, a 2020 Guggenheim Fellow, and a 2021 Forge Project Fellow.
